    Assist DVMs and veterinary technicians in the care of patients and clients.

    REPORTS TO: Supervisor – Technical Services Department

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    1. Successfully restrain animals.
    2. Complete clinical laboratory tests.
    3. Administer anesthesia, monitor animals under anesthesia, assist in surgery, and perform dental procedures.
    4. Deliver compassionate nursing care.
    5. Prepare and dispense patient medications.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    • Broad knowledge of animal science, medicine, and husbandry, including a basic knowledge of pharmacology and sufficient mathematical skills to ensure the administration of accurate drug and fluid doses.
    • Know the range of services the practice provides.
    • Be reasonably familiar with breeds and coat colors.
    • Follow OSHA standards. Be able to find Material Safety Data Sheets quickly.
    • Know and use standard medical and business abbreviations.
    • Use proper medical terminology when speaking and writing.
    • Be familiar with infectious diseases, including their prevention and steps to reduce or eliminate transmission. Know the most common zoonotic diseases (infections from cats to humans). Understand the life cycle and pathology of common feline parasites (intestinal parasites, heartworms, fleas, ticks), and know the names of most common preventives, recommended treatments, and diagnostics.
    • Possess good spelling abilities.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    • High school diploma or equivalent. Technicians should have graduated from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technician program. Nurses should have completed a minimum of 3-5 years of hospital-approved, applicable, and relevant clinical experience.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Must be able to read charts, computer screen and examine patients.
    • Must be able to hear well enough to communicate with clients and other employees.
    • Standing/walking approximately 90% of the time.
    • Moderate patient lifting (up to 25 lbs.) approximately 20% of the time.
    • Bending/kneeling approximately 20% of the time.
    • Must be able to work all hours the hospital is open.
