Assist DVMs and veterinary technicians in the care of patients and clients.

REPORTS TO: Supervisor – Technical Services Department

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Assist DVMs with physical examinations and other exam room functions. Assist in preparation and dispensing of medications. Assist veterinary technicians with radiographs, surgical preparation, nursing comfort and care, treatments, procedures, and basic laboratory tests. Client communication. Accompany DVM on house calls.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Follow OSHA standards. Be able to find Material Safety Data Sheets quickly. Know and use standard medical and business abbreviations. Use proper medical terminology when speaking and writing. Understand the life cycle and pathology of common feline parasites (intestinal parasites, heartworms, fleas, ticks), and know the names of most common preventives, recommended treatments, and diagnostics. Possess good spelling abilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma or equivalent. Previous experience handling cats.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to read charts, computer screen and examine patients. Must be able to hear well enough to communicate with clients and other employees. Standing/walking approximately 90% of the time. Moderate lifting (up to 25 lbs.) approximately 20% of the time. Bending/kneeling approximately 20% of the time. Must be able to work all hours the hospital is open.
