  • My Cat Ate Pot Pourri

    Dear Boo:

I realize you are very busy entertaining all of us when we come to the office but because it is the holiday season and many of your friends live in homes that use oils to flavor their pot pourri at this time of year I would like to know if it is safe for cats or if it could hurt their livers like I’m told some essential oils can.

Thanks, Oscar, Felix, and Tasha that allow Maxine Kinikin and Don Morrison to live with them.

P.S. Happy Holidays to you and the hospital Boo!

    Dear Oscar, Felix and Tasha,

Thanks for your great question at this holiday season. Unfortunately liquid potpourri can be very toxic to us if we ingest it or if our skin and eyes come in contact with it. Liquid potpourri may contain essential oils and/or a type of detergent, both of which are toxic to us. We can develop severe ulcers in our mouths, on our eyes and in our intestinal tract. We can sometimes start vomiting and become very lethargic. Fortunately, if our people get us to the veterinarian right away, we can be treated and recover completely.

There are many hazards for us as curious cats during the holiday season (all that tinsel, ribbon, candles and other fun things!). Liquid potpourri is one more hazard to be added to the list that our people need to keep out of our reach!

    Thanks again,

    Boo
